Noel Gallagher earned his fame as guitarist, singer and main songwriter for the legendary 90s Britpop band, Oasis. He has been responsible for many of the band’s hit songs, including “Wonderwall,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” “Champagne Supernova” and “Stop Crying Your Heart Out,” among others. In 2009, after leaving Oasis, he started his own successful band, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, who have released two well received albums to date. Number One: He is Ambidextrous. Noel Gallagher considers himself to be left-handed. However, he plays guitar right-handed.
Number Two: He Got His Start in Music as a Roadie. An acquaintance of Inspiral Carpets guitarist, Graham Lambert, for years, Noel Gallagher decided to audition to be the band’s new lead singer. When he failed to obtain the position, he became a part of the band’s road crew and toured with them for two years.
Number Three: He Speaks His Mind. Noel Gallagher has a penchant for speaking his mind and often has harsh words for other artists. In the past, he has had feuds with Damien Alburn, Jay-Z and Phil Collins. However, he has said that he never intends to insult people, he just says what he feels at that moment.
Number Four: He is No Longer Feuding with Damian Albarn. During the Britpop era, there was a media-hyped war between Noel Gallagher’s band, Oasis, and Damian Albarn’s band, Blur. Though the two have made some nasty statements to each other, the two singers really don’t hate each other. In fact, the two have expressed interest in collaborating at some point. Further, in 2013, Gallagher and Damon performed together, along with Graham Coxon and Paul Weller, at the Teenage Cancer Trust benefit, singing Blur’s “Tender.”
Number Five: He Still Plays Some Oasis Songs in His Set. Noel Gallagher has been known to cover a few Oasis songs in his solo sets, although he doesn’t always play the hits. During his recent European tour, he played five Oasis songs, with “Don’t Look Back in Anger” being the only single of the bunch.
Number Six: He Self-Produced His Second Solo Album. After hiring a professional producer for his debut solo album, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, the second time around he did it himself. Of Chasing Yesterday, he has said that the album is “more rough around the edges” and has “a bit more guitar action.”
Number Seven: He’s a Fan of Seinfeld. Noel Gallagher has said that he is a big fan of the show Seinfeld, saying that it “reminds [him] of the nineties.” In an interview, he related that when his now wife told him she had not seen the show, he had her watch it because it was important to him that she like it.
Number Eight: He Dislikes Pop Music. While Gallagher does not have a problem with the pop singers themselves, he does feel that much of pop music today is very “bland.” Though he thinks she is a “nice girl,” he has made remarks about Taylor Swift criticizing her songwriting skills. He has also said that he has a problem with singers who have other people write their songs for them.
Number Nine: Wrote “Wonderwall” For His Girlfriend. Noel Gallagher wrote the Oasis hit for his ex-wife while they were dating. He was also supposed to sing on the track, but let his brother Liam do it instead.
Number Ten: He Wrote Most of Oasis’ Songs. Once of Gallagher’s conditions when joining the band was that he get creative control of their music. For the band’s first three albums, he was the sole songwriter. He let up a little on Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, which featured one song written by his brother Liam.
Number Eleven: His Solo Project’s Name Came from a Song Title. Gallagher has said that the name “Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds” was a combination of the album title Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac and the Jefferson Airplane song “High Flying Bird.”
Number Twelve: He Left Oasis Because of a Fight with His Brother. Noel and Liam Gallagher were known to have a rocky relationship, but one night in 2009 sent Noel over the edge. At the Rock en Seine Festival, the brothers were having a go at each other. The fight escalated and Liam allegedly smashed Noel’s guitar. Oasis ended up cancelling the show minutes before they had to go on stage and Noel stated in a post on the band’s website later that night that he left the band because he “could not go on working with Liam a day longer.”
Number Thirteen: He is Friends with Russel Brand. Noel Gallagher and Russell Brand are really good friends. Such good friends in fact, that Brand was the best man at Gallagher’s wedding to second wife Sara MacDonald. Gallagher was also a frequent contributor on Brand’s BBC radio show, and even co-hosted with him in a special 2009 episode on Talksport.
Number Fourteen: He is an Avid Sports Fan. A lifelong Manchester City fan, Gallagher is friends with a number of the players and helped unveil the team’s Umbro-sponsored football kits in 2012-2013. He was also an official ambassador for England in their campaign to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Number Fifteen: He Was Offered a Judging Role on X Factor. When Dannii Manogue, Cheryl Cole and Simon Cowell decided not to come back to the show in season eight, Cowell asked Gallagher to participate. He declined.
