Jennifer Hudson is a popular singer and actress who rose to fame in ’04 as a finalist on the 3rd season of American Idol. Here, MusicSnake Magazine put together a list of top 10 surprising facts you probably didn’t know about her.

Number One: She Dropped Out of College. While she enrolled at Langston University, she never finished. Jennifer was too homesick and unhappy with the weather to continue.

Number Two: The Singer Lost 56Lbs With Weight Watchers and Went on to Represent the Brand. After losing 56 Lbs, she was asked to represent the brand Weight Watchers in a series of new commercials. In ’11, she revealed on the Oprah Winfrey Show that she lost a total of 80 Lbs.

Number Three: She Is a Dramatic Soprano. If anyone can belt for Jesus as the saying goes, it is Jennifer Hudson. As a soprano, and a dramatic one at that, she has a vocal range from a C3 to a C#6. Impressive!

Number Four: She Has Her Own Star. Jennifer Hudson may not have a star in the sky, but she does have one on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She received this honor ’13.

Number Five: Hudson Started Out in a Church Choir. She began singing at the age of seven. As many other artists started out, she sang in the choir at her church in her hometown of Chicago.

Number Six: Jennifer Had an Entire Year of ‘Artist Development’ After Snagging Her First Record Contract. She makes it look easy whenever she is on stage which is mainly due to the intense training she received after being given her first record deal. Righteous Records, a Chicago record label gave Hudson her first contract and put her through serious artist development during her first year which included stage presence, on-camera interviewing and songwriting training.

Number Seven: The Actress Has Her Own Holiday. Mayor of Chicago Richard Daley gave Jennifer her own holiday. Jennifer Hudson day is celebrated on March 6 every year.

Number Eight: Hudson and Vogue. To be photographed for Vogue is a big enough honor. To be on the cover of the magazine is an even bigger opportunity, though. Jennifer Hudson is only one of three other African-American celebrities and actresses to do so.

Number Nine: The Singer Worked at Burger King. She started out like the rest of us, working in places like Burger King and a Disney cruise ship. Even these humble beginnings didn’t keep her from going after what she really wanted.

Number Ten: She Experienced a Great Personal Tragedy. In October of ’08, Jennifer’s mother Darnell and brother Jason were shot and killed at their home in Chicago. Her nephew, Julian Hudson-King was also kidnapped and later found dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Her brother-in-law Balfour was later arrested for the murders.
